| Tell us a little about yourself or your loved one: | |
| Q1: What was your situation when you or your loved one first started experiencing elder abuse, neglect, and/or fraud? (What was your/their living situation like, were you/they struggling with any health issues, etc.?) | I originally came to care for the person when I was trying to make money cleaning peoples homes. I saw that this person was being exploited financially from many different avenues, but I did not know at that time to the extent of the situation so I began assisting him and he liked the work that I was doing And asked me to stay on as his caregiver and it made people angry because they couldn't take advantage of him anymore |
| Q2: What would you like to share about your story? | I knew nothing about being a caregiver and what was required of me both legally and ethically, but I had to learn all aspects of caregiving on my own because every avenue that I attempted to reach out for help was like hitting up And not only that but fraudulent activity was still continuing to occur and not only was it continuing to occur, but then the situation was made to look like I was a perpetrator when in essence all I was trying to do was to cease the reoccurrence of fraudulent activities |
| Q3: What do you wish people knew about elder abuse, neglect, and fraud? | Mr. Roberts does have mild cognitive impairment and the onset of dementia/Alzheimer's. It's very imperative for seniors to have implications in place for these types of diagnosis, not only to protect them, but should protect the one's caregiving for them by myself have been victimized by Fraud and I know what it's like to have every door shut in my face And how disheartening that is I wouldn't want this to occur to anyone so I've taken on this responsibility and when I can't find any assistance to alleviate the situation, and then it continues to occur and then is made to look as though I am the perpetrator it completely and utterly ties my hands And due to this since the banking institution has an obligation to report suspected fraud to protective services and then they do an investigation and deem that the senior does need assistance with financial activity has a hearing without the senior being present appoints a court appointed attorney. They tell him that they are going to continue the hearing And then a point a guardian and the case goes from alleged incapacitation to incapacity without him being present at a hearing which violates his due process rights tricks him into believing the first time that he meets the guardian that he is going to the hospital to get checked to make sure that nothing is wrong prior to the guardian taking over guardianship of the senior Lied to and told that he is being kept at the hospital due to blood pressure issues when really they were keeping him at the hospital until they could find a bed in a facility for him and then placing him into a facility when he didn't need to be in a facility And was deemed by home healthcare nurses and staff occupational therapy, physical therapy, social services at the nursing in-home nursing agency and the visiting nurse that he is capable of bathing, exercising making meals, using assisted devices to have mobility just needs assistance and is placed into a residential facility against his will And then the guardian context me and while I'm on a three-way call with the senior and states that it's in everybody's interest for me to vacate the home that I've lived in for the past two years and have tended and cared for the senior and the first thing that said was the seniors response that no he doesn't want me to leave and no, I don't have to leave and the guardian Tells him he has no authority in this matter and that the guardian wants to handle this outside of court is also in my opinion, a violation of his rights according to the guardianship handbook for the state of Pennsylvania that states that the guardian is supposed to communicate any decisions with the said individual and have their best interest at heart and protective services has clearly stated That I've done nothing wrong and I have concluded their investigation then why do I have to leave when it's not in the wishes of the senior and the senior is pretty much being held against his will because of this guardian and his court appointed attorney just makes the statement that he is the guardian what can be done |
| Q4: What are your hopes for the future? | My hopes for the future is that the situation is resolved, and the senior who was removed from his home gets to return to his home that is bought and paid for, and not everything that he owns is taken and sold for the profits to keep him somewhere that he doesn't belong nor need as well as for paying for a guardian to exploit the situation because no senior should have to pass in a nursing home. They should be able to be comfortable in their own home that they've worked all their lives for. |
| Can our staff follow up with you about your story? | Yes |
| Are you interested in sharing your story further? (We can contact you about speaking with local media, elected officials, or recording your story for a video or podcast) | Yes |
| Can we use your name in telling your story? | Yes |
| Is there anything else you would like to add? | Every time I tried to reach out to get implications in place for the senior Mr. Roberts, I couldn't find any assistance. I tried to get him the waiver for me to get paid as his caregiver aging an adult services approved it. His doctor approved it and Health and Human Services stated that he made a $625 over the income guidelines and then never explained the spend down program Because of my past criminal history when I was a drug addict disqualifies me as his acting guardian his health issues disqualify him from life insurance and it just seems like every avenue I've explored has led to a dead end and I truly care for this person as I would want anybody to do for my parents if I was unable to and I've reached out to his children All of which are adults and nobody wants to be bothered and I won't want anybody doing that to my parents |
